Glutathione is a potent antioxidant, and its depletion is a component of every chronic disease, or inflammatory condition, including aging. It is the main intracellular anti-oxidant found in the liver.
Hepatitis C is disease of oxidation. The Hepatitis C Virus does not directly injure the hepatocytes or liver cells. It is a cellular immune response to the presence of the HCV virus that generates a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that subsequently damages the liver. Acetylation is used with aspirin as it allows molecules to more easily pass through the blood brain barrier. Acetyl-Glutathione was patented in 1995. The makers received their patent with the claim that acetylating glutathione would enable it to pass through cellular barriers into the liver more easily.
Glutathione is a three-amino acid strand and it can be acetylated at any position along that chain. It was created to be easily assimilated intracellularly, so it can then can perform its powerful antioxidant and metabolic regulatory effects without prior decomposition by peptidases.
